At the Fringe chronicles the experiences of Davidson College student performers at the 2006 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Their two productions are based on the work of William Shakespeare, and were crafted by a team from the Royal Shakespeare Company while in residency at Davidson. Come see for yourself at the Rocket@DeMarco Roxy Art House from August 3-17!

A Poetic Fringe Farewell

Last-supper.jpg

(l-r) Elizabeth Davis, Bryant Kirkland, and Steve Kaliski presented an original poem, "For Every Person, Something" to honor their fellow troupers during the final evening's supper in Edinburgh.

Gathered round the tables at B'est Restaurant, just down the street from the Rocket Venues where they had performed for the past three weeks, Davidson students reminisced last Thursday night about their time together at the Fringe. Bryant Kirkland unveiled quatrains he and several co-conspirators had written, capping the experience with special tributes to each of the twenty-eight comrades...

Catching a Cab at 5 a.m.

Entry by Meg Kimmel, Director of College Communications

So it’s 5:15 in the morning, and our cab pulls up to the curb in front of the flat that’s been our home for the past two and a half weeks. Hal, Cynthia, and I have six bags, three backpacks, and a big cardboard tube holding a Davidson banner piled up on the sidewalk. The cabbie balks at the prospect of all of this fitting, but we resolutely start to stuff it into his taxi. About that time, a guy wobbles by, a bit tough looking, with a fresh gash over his right eye...

(l-r) Dana Professor of English Cynthia Lewis introduces student actors Hanley Smith and Steve Kaliski to speak about their experiences to participants in a Friends of the Arts trip to Scotland.

Entry by Meg Kimmel, Director of College Communications

Just two days left now, two performances, and a closing night party at a little restaurant, B’est, just a half-block from the theatre venue. This morning we learned that the venue was without electricity! A big relief to find that it has been restored and the show will go on...

Briana the Star!

Amos.jpg
(l-r) Jax and Briana flank British comedian Stephen K. Amos.

A serendipitous moment on Saturday might be Briana Hunter’s rocket ride to fame. She and several other students were passing out promotional fliers around a popular Fringe venue called “The Udderbelly.” A film crew in the square was following star comedian Stephen K. Amos as he interviewed random people about their Fringe experience...

This Show Went Swimmingly!

Entry by Meg Kimmel, Director of College Communications

At 10:20 Thursday night, Cynthia and I caught a production of Mary Zimmerman’s Metamorphoses, presented, in the typically enterprising Fringe way, in a small swimming pool venue in a hotel on Grassmarket Street. We were two among twenty-eight -- a full house -- lined along a ledge on one side of the pool...

Good Intentions

Entry by Emily Bostian '06, Company Manager

Being at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival is a lot like being at the Activities Fair during Orientation for first year students. I remember walking into the Union and being overwhelmed with the sheer number of tables and people buzzing around them. I thought I was being careful about only signing up for some of the activities...

Running the Show

Entry by Tammy Ivins ’07, stage manager

After more than a week, Edinburgh is slowly starting to feel like home. In particular, our performance venue at the Roxy is becoming a familiar place. As stage manager, I have had the fortunate opportunity to work with people from Davidson and the Fringe on the technical aspects of our shows...

Bring on the Critics!

Entry by Bryant Kirkland '07

The thought of being reviewed as an acting company for our productions, "Infinite Variety" and "For Every Passion Something," inspired no small trepidation on my part. I had become happily used to the support of friends and family while performing at Davidson; but now, I thought, a different, perhaps less amicable world of critics awaits.

A large brush fire on the hills of Hollyrood Park two days ago called to mind one of the most intense moments in the Davidson play, “For Every Passion Something...”

Good, Bad, and Just Plain Abysmal

BathrobeBoys.jpg
The level of creativity at the Fringe encompasses even this short act of skillful bathrobe manipulation by a trio of actors.

Entry by Visiting Writer M.K. Wyle '06

“Infinite Variety,” the title of the songs and sonnets portion of Davidson’s Fringe offerings, is an equally apt subtitle for the festival as a whole. With more than 1,800 shows playing in more than 200 separate venues, the city has something for every taste. Alas, the quality covers a similarly wide range, from amateur productions reminiscent of the film “Waiting for Guffman” to professional shows straight off London’s West End. Theatre-goers need both luck and skill to separate the wheat from the chaff.
