That Little Fork

You are sitting down to a business dinner and you glance at the place setting and you are confused - What is that little fork?

"If you have a little bitty fork resting at a diagonal in the bowl of your soup spoon on the right side of your place setting, it is not for your baby carrots or your baby squash. It means the first course will be a seafood course, such as oysters, shrimp or crab.

If the little fork has two prongs instead of three, the seafood course will be escargot (snails)."

Now you know what the fork is for... do you like the foods it is designed to lift? That is a conversation for another day.

CLASS OF 2013 - WELCOME

Tomorrow the Class of 2013 arrives on Davidson's campus. It is an exceptionally joyful and exciting experience, individually and as a family, to embark on this new adventure. Mom and Dad will struggle with the separation, the distance, the unknown. Son or daughter will be facing new challenges, new relationships, and new opportunities without their best friends by their side. All will be searching for a new self identity. Yet, for the whole family, it is incredibly exciting to be part of a new community.

The friendships to be found at Davidson will last a lifetime. Your friends will fly across the country to be at your side years after graduation. They may become your spouse, your campaign manager, your best friend, your biographer, your congressman.

Reach out to the people around you. Ask that faculty member the question you forgot in class. Have lunch with strangers. Become great friends with your floor and hall mates. Find connections with your team mates beyond the field, court, or arena. Get to know the staff around campus. These relationships shall change you, challenge you, lead you to growth as a person.

This is an exciting place driven by you and the people surrounding you. Open yourself to this opportunity. Be joyful. Be engaged.

It is the people that make this a special place that you will carry in your heart, mind and soul the rest of your life.

Welcome Class of 2013!

5th Annual Orientation Service Walk

Incoming students will participate in a 5K walk through the town of Davidson to learn about the town's history, service opportunities, and each other. The theme for the walk this year is "Healthy People, Healthy Communites". In support of this theme, new students will be encouraged to raise money for each kilometer of the walk with the funds raised going to The Free Clinic of Our Towns, a local non-profit organization that provides free medical care to the uninsured in the Lake Norman community.

The annual service walk provides a first opporunity for the College's students to actively engage in a "life of leadership and service" as part of the Davidson Family. "The primary purpose of Davidon College is to assist students in developing humane instincts and disciplined and creative minds for lives of leadership and serivce." It is in this spirit that the first year students take this walk.

Over the four years they study, work and play at Davidson, ledership and service will be constantly lifted up to the students. By the time they graduate, in this case in 2013, they will have:

  • created organizations,
  • provided successful leadership for organizations
  • delivered countless hours of service to the braoder community
  • served the College in countless ways

and, most importantly, learned to walk the world with service as a prime value and leadership as a gift to use in addressing the challenges of the globe.

Lives of leadership and service grounded in a simple walk.
