Myles – California Dreaming: An Update

First,

Let me apologize to my readers. I’ve been beyond lax in updating and blogging about my experiences at Davidson thus far. However, the result is that I have just a ridiculous amount to tell you about.

Now, I’ve written about the work load of Davidson before. Now, I’ve cried wolf a fair bit, but what is critical here is time management, and I’ve been treading water in that particular stream for a while now. Recently it all came to a head with a combination of pledging a fraternity, the SGA Fiasco regarding its Composition, SGA Elections, Homework, and Sports Clubs. Basically, this all had a product of driving the blog from my mind despite the convenient reminders that get emailed to my computer. So, again, I shall apologize. But let us start off on a brighter note:

The Quad in Winter

So, this was the scene that greeted me one bright January Morning. The temperature? A balmy 72 Degrees, a nice shine breaking through the leafy canopy, Davidson students soaking it up like theres no tomorrow. This would probably be repeated every day for the next few weeks. I can almost confidently say that the temperature is not likely to change enough to take us out of shorts and T-shirts any time soon. This in itself was a significant distraction.

Now, I mentioned that I was pledging.  Patterson Court is the ‘organization’ which oversee’s Davidson’s, I think, 13 Eating Houses and Sororities. Yes, there is a Greek Life alive and well at Davidson College. That said, this is not Animal House, and we are not State. First Semester is entirely Greek free if desired, and Freshman aren’t even given bids until the last few weeks of 1st Semester. The ‘Pledging’ process starts 2nd Semester and lasts for eight weeks, give or take a few depending on the fraternity. That said, Fraternity, Eating House, and Sorority members on campus DONT have an On-Campus house where they all live and end up ignoring the rest of society. That wouldn’t work at a college which emphasizes community and interaction as much as this one. The house is just for eating and events, thats it. Basically, its our kick-back spot where we can hang when we want, eat if we’d like, and blare music from pretty nice speakers at all (respectable) times.

Now, my other big obligation has been SGA. I’ve been an SGA Freshman Senator for my class since the beginning of the year and there are a lot of big things going on there. Debates are starting to get fierce . . . I love it. Sadly, this will have to wait a bit because I’m late to something already.

Conclusion? Things are pretty active here on Campus. I hope you’ll keep following my posts and I promise, the frequency will increase dramatically in comparison to the last few!
