Kelsey – location, location, location

Hey y’all!

Its been a little while since I posted, so I wanted to give everyone a quick update. The weather is rapidly getting colder, which reminds me of my favorite coming season: fall. The leaves change, the air is less humid, and my favorite Davidson break is coming up.

Davidson is great in that they give their students a few days off from school in the middle of fall semester to go home, take a short trip, or simply de-stress (as much as that is possible, anyway….). While it may not be fair to compare Fall Break (starting Friday) to Thanksgiving or Winter Break, it’s definitely unique in that not all colleges offer it. Every year, I’ve enjoyed my four-day sabbatical from homework and classes to visit friends at other schools, or simply go home to see my family.

Kelsey – On war and careers

It’s been a pretty rainy week here. But, like Davidson, there have been some beautiful sunny breakthroughs. Like yesterday, it poured rain on and off–until it was time for the football game, when it was perfectly clear! It was gorgeous weather by the time the game kicked off, and it continued through the 35-7 Davidson win!

But, back to the week. This week was awfully busy for me, with a paper and a Bio test within a day of each other. But, as a reward for a busy start to the week, I had the chance to see the annual Reynolds lecture by award-winning author and journalist Sebastian Junger.

Kate – The Leather Backpack

Since November, I’ve been anxiously waiting for March 15th to roll around wish hopes that I will be named as a 2011-2012 Watson Fellow. The Watson Fellowship is a “one year grant for independent study and travel outside the United States awarded to graduating college students nominated from participating institutions.” If I receive the Watson, I will spend all of next year studying slam poetry communities abroad in Germany, Spain, South Africa, Australia and Chile. Now, the day has finally come and I feel like a little kid on Christmas, waiting to see if Santa brought me switches and coal or fun surprises.Philosophically, I’m torn all over the place but the same old Christmas-time question roles around in my head, Have I been good this year?
