Microsoft Releases Windows Vista and Office 2007

Last week Microsoft released the final version of the Windows Vista operating system and Office 2007 to their enterprise clients. The anticipated release date for the general public is January 30, 2007.

ITS is testing these new versions and planning the rollout to campus in the new year. We anticipate the migration will start in the spring for computers in faculty and staff offices. Most computer classrooms and labs will migrate to the new versions in the summer.

Information about Vista and Office 2007 are available on the Microsoft Web site.

PureMessage SPAM Protection Upgrade Planned

During the winter break ITS will upgrade its software and equipment for SPAM protection and blocking. We anticipate that the result will be more accurate SPAM blocking (less SPAM reaching your mailbox as legitimate mail) and a more convenient interface for checking your personal quarantine.

In the past, departments have received these types of conference capabilities from BellSouth and AT&T. Our PBX system has a conference bridge, so these same quality services can be provided from our campus.

Data Warehouse Study Underway

A recent survey of higher education institutions by the Campus Computing Project showed that generating reports from enterprise administrative systems, such as Banner, to be among the key challenges faced by many colleges and universities. Administrative systems are primarily intended and designed to manage vital campus resources and functions – admission and financial aid, academic affairs, student life, college relations, human resources, business and finance, and more. The critical nature of the day-to-day transactions, such as tracking grades or recording donor gifts, coupled with the complexity of the thousands of tables found in such integrated databases makes administrative systems ill-suited for reporting purposes.
