Sign up to receive outage notices on notify-l

Do you want to know more about what might be happening to the campus network in the near future? Notify-l is the mailing list for those who want to know about anything that will impact the campus network, servers, or the Internet. Instead of sending all messages about events and outages to campus-wide distribution lists, we send to notify-l to get everyone that has a stake in the functioning of the network and servers. We encourage everyone to sign up. Here's how.

Send an e-mail to listserv@davidson.edu.

The e-mail should have a blank subject line.

The first line of the message should be:

subscribe notify-l

The rest of the email should be empty--no text, signatures, pictures, attachments, icons, or anything else.

You can also use these instructions to sign up for any of our other voluntary lists by substituting the other list name for notify-l.

Cool Mac Tip: Use menus without using the mouse

I'm a speed nut — when I'm working at the computer, I do everything I can to save time. That includes using a lot of keyboard shortcuts to avoid using the menus. Still, there are always some commands that don't have keyboard shortcuts. Getting to those means taking your hand off the keyboard, grabbing the mouse, finding the cursor, and then finally going to the menu bar to access the command.

Until now.

Apple and Scott Kelby just pointed out this super-handy timesaver (note that this trick requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later). To activate the menu bar, just press Control-F2. The Apple menu icon will highlight. Now you can move left and right using the left/right arrow keys to select the menu you need. Press Return to drop the menu down, then type the first letter of the command you need, and the selection will jump to that command. Pressing Return selects the command.

No mouse involved! Perfect...fast and simple.

Introducing ITS News Blog

Your colleagues in Information Technology Services are pleased to introduce our new ITS News Blog. For those not conversant with the term, a Blog is simply a web-based journal that is frequently updated with news. We have retired the monthly ITS newsletter and moved to this new format to provide you with campus technology news on an ongoing basis rather than through a monthly publication. Better yet, our new Blog is intended as an interactive exchange allowing you, our clients, to post your comments and reactions to the posted technology news stories.

As we interact with you in this new medium, a large part of our work will be listening to you. We look forward to your comments on what you are looking to accomplish with technology, how you anticipate your IT needs changing over time, what you like about what is currently available and what you need that is not currently offered.

It is our hope that patterns emerging from your responses will guide us as we plan for current and future technology services to better serve you.
