Find images by color using Google Image Search

Everyone knows Google is an excellent search engine for text and links. Fewer know that it's a great way to find images as well. Until recently, though, only a very few people realized that you can also search Google's database of images according to the color of the image. Here's how.

First, load up Google Image Search. Then enter the keywords you need to specify the category of images you want to search for. For purposes of this example, I'll search for "car." Obviously, this is really, really broad -- the basic search returns about 129 million results.

There are many ways to narrow this down -- starting with a better choice of keywords -- but let's assume for the moment that all I know is that I want to see pictures of yellow cars. To get the search narrowed down, just modify the URL in the Address field by adding this text to the trailing end:

&imgcolor=yellow

For your own search, simply substitute the color of your choice where I've used "yellow." Your Address field should look like this:

address.jpg

And entering that URL reruns the "car" search, narrowing it by the requested color:

Regrettably, Google hasn't yet implemented a way to do this with a button, menu or other simple selector. You have to modify the URL manually. Fortunately, though, it isn't difficult, and it's a very handy way to quickly narrow results to fit the color scheme you need.

A brief note of warning: Google Image Search does not respect copyright. Rather, it trolls the Web for any image that matches your criteria. You are responsible for ensuring that you have the right to use whatever images you eventually select. Keep in mind the Code of Best Practices in Fair Use, and the Creative Commons license.
