CALL FOR UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS

Summer 2008 Issue of the Quarterly

Submissions for the "Undergraduate Research Highlights" feature of the Summer 2008 issue of the CUR Quarterly are being accepted until Friday, April 18, 2008. Highlights consist of brief descriptions of recent (past six months) peer-reviewed research or scholarly publications in scholarly journals. These publications must be in print and must include one or more undergraduate co-author. To be considered for publication as an Undergraduate Research Highlight, a submission should include the information listed below and MUST CONFORM TO THE FORMAT OF THE EXAMPLE PROVIDED BELOW. Submissions must be sent to the Editor of the Quarterly by email (Kelly McConnaughay -- kdm@bradley.edu).

ASSOCIATED COLLEGES OF THE SOUTH: Grants in Faculty and Institutional Renewal

DEADLINE: October 1, 2008 (pre-proposal)

ACS is offering new grants in faculty and institutional renewal, supported by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. In the next round of grants, pre-proposals are due on October 1, 2008. For those pre-proposals that are approved, final proposals will be due on January 15, 2009.

NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS: Challenge America Fast-Track Review Grants

The NEA Challenge America Fast-Track Review program offers $10,000 grants to small and mid-sized organizations for projects that extend the reach of the arts to underserved populations -- those whose opportunities to experience the arts are limited by geography, ethnicity, economics or disability.

NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION; Course, Curriculum and Laboratory Improvement (CCLI)

DEADLINE: May 21, 2008 (Phase I)

The Course, Curriculum and Laboratory Improvement (CCLI) program at the National Science Foundation supports projects that build on prior work and contribute to the knowledge base of undergraduate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education research and practice. With an emphasis on measurable outcomes, the program will support: 1) conducting research on undergraduate STEM teaching and learning; 2) creating learning materials and teaching strategies; 3) developing faculty expertise; 4) implementing educational innovations; and 5) assessing learning and evaluating innovations.

NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION: Research Experiences for Undergraduates

DEADLINE: August 18, 2008

Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) is a Foundation-wide program that supports active research participation by undergraduate students. NSF funds research in most fields of science and engineering. The REU program seeks to expand student participation in all kinds of research--whether disciplinary, interdisciplinary, or educational in focus--encompassing efforts by individual investigators, groups, centers, national facilities, and others.

AMERICAN SOCIOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION: Fund for the Advancement of the Discipline (FAD)

DEADLINES: June 15th, December 15th

The American Sociological Association invites submissions by PhD sociologists for the Fund for the Advancement of the Discipline (FAD) awards. Supported by the American Sociological Association through a matching grant from the National Science Foundation, the goal of this project is to nurture the development of scientific knowledge by funding small, groundbreaking research initiatives and other important scientific research activities such as conferences. FAD awards provide scholars with small grants ($7,000 maximum) for innovative research that has the potential for challenging the discipline, stimulating new lines of research, and creating new networks of scientific collaboration. The award is intended to provide opportunities for substantive and methodological breakthroughs, broaden the dissemination of scientific knowledge, and provide leverage for acquisition of additional research funds.

NITLE INSTRUCTIONAL INNOVATION FUND: Community-Driven Projects

DEADLINE: May 15, 2008

The NITLE Instructional Innovation Fund (IIF) is a program of competitive awards designed to recognize and promote campus-based innovations and collaborations. The program, administered as four separate funds by the regional advisory councils of NITLE, will run through June 2008. Comprehensive participating colleges enrolled in NITLE for the 2006 - 2008 period are eligible to apply for support from the IIF.

NSF: Chemistry Research Instrumentation and Facilities: Departmental Multi-User Instrumentation

The Chemistry Research Instrumentation and Facilities Program (CRIF) is structured to enable the National Science Foundation's Division of Chemistry to respond to a variety of needs for infrastructure that promotes research and education in areas traditionally supported by the Division (NSF Chemistry Homepage).The Departmental Multi-User Instrumentation component of CRIF (CRIF:MU) provides funds to universities, colleges, and consortia thereof for the purchase of multi-user instruments. The Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Awards Program supports the research and teaching careers of talented young faculty in the chemical sciences. Based on institutional nominations, the program provides discretionary funding to faculty at an early stage in their careers. The Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Awards Program is based on accomplishment in scholarly research with undergraduates, as well as a compelling commitment to teaching. The Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Awards Program provides an unrestricted research grant of $60,000.

NSF: Division of Molecular and Cellular Biosciences

The Division of Molecular and Cellular Biosciences (MCB) supports fundamental research and related activities that address the dynamic underpinnings of complex living systems at the molecular, subcellular and cellular levels.

The spectrum of topics covered within the MCB portfolio of funded projects generally focus on the determination of the structure, function and dynamic properties of the complex molecular machinery involved in information transfer, regulation, signaling, and cellular architecture and organization. Awards include integrative projects that address (i) molecular structure, function and organization (ii) genetic, metabolic, and signaling pathways or networks and the regulatory mechanisms that control them, (iii) the significance of spatial and temporal organization on protein or RNA folding, genome structure and genetic processes, and other cellular mechanisms, (iv) communication and interaction between molecules, macromolecules, and subcellular components and pathways, and (v) the flow of energy and information within and between molecules or macromolecular complexes, or within and between cells.

NSF: Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences

The Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences supports research to develop and advance scientific knowledge on human cognition, language, social behavior and culture, as well as research on the interactions between human societies and the physical environment. BCS programs consider proposals that fall squarely within disciplines, but they also encourage and support interdisciplinary projects.

GERMAN ACADEMIC EXCHANGE SERVICE: DAAD-AICGS Research Fellowships

DEADLINE: August 31, 2008 (for Spring 2009)

AICGS is now accepting applications for the next round of DAAD fellowships. The application deadline for Spring 2009 (January 2009 - June 2009) is August 31, 2008. The DAAD/AICGS Research Fellowship Program, funded by a generous grant from the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD), is designed to bring scholars and specialists working on Germany, Europe, and/or transatlantic relations to AICGS for research stays of two months each.
