The North American Wetlands Act Standard Grants Program at the Department of Interior Fish and Wildlife Service, is a competitive, matching grants program that supports public-private partnerships carrying out projects in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. These projects must involve long-term protection, restoration, and/or enhancement of wetlands and associated uplands habitats. CAMILLE AND HENRY DREYFUS FOUNDATION: Postdoctoral Program in Environmental Chemistry

NSF: Instrument Development for Biological Research

AMERICAN GRADUATE FELLOWSHIPS

DEADLINE: October 15, 2008

The American Graduate Fellowships are an initiative of the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) to promote and support doctoral study in the humanities (history, philosophy, fine arts, literature and languages) by accomplished graduates of small and mid-sized private liberal arts colleges. The fellowships are worth up to $50,000 each and are renewable for a second year. The deadline for the next American Graduate Fellowships competition is October 15, 2008.

COUNCIL ON UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS

Fall 2008 issue of the Quarterly

Submissions for the "Undergraduate Research Highlights" feature of the Summer 2008 issue of the CUR Quarterly are being accepted until Friday, July 18, 2008. Highlights consist of brief descriptions of recent (past six months) peer-reviewed research or scholarly public ations in scholarly journals. These publications must be in print and must include one or more undergraduate co-authors. To be considered for publication as an Undergraduate Research Highlight, a submission should include the information listed below and MUST CONFORM TO THE FORMAT OF THE EXAMPLE PROVIDED BELOW. Submissions must be sent to the Editor of the Quarterly by email (Kelly McConnaughay - kdm@bradley.edu).

Submissions not selected for inclusion in the Quarterly will be posted to the Highlights portion of CUR's web site.

2009 NSF GRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP

The National Science Foundation invites applications for the 2009 Graduate Research Fellowship (NSF-GRFP) competition. This program offers up to 3 years of graduate school support worth over $120,000 to each awardee - last year 913 awards were granted. Benefits include a $30,000 annual stipend, a $10,500 annual cost of education allowance, a one time $1,000 travel allowance, and access to TeraGrid supercomputing facilities. U.S. citizens, nationals, and permanent residents at or near the beginning of their graduate study seeking research-based Master's and/or PhD degrees in NSF-supported science (including social science and psychology) and engineering disciplines are eligible to apply. The application process is expected to open in August 2008 and close early November 2008. UPCOMING CUR INSTITUTE: UNC-G, October 3-5, 2008

The application deadline for the upcoming CUR Institute, Initiating and Sustaining Undergraduate Research Programs has been extended to August 15, 2008. This Institute will be held at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, October 3-5, 2008 (PLEASE NOTE THE DATE CHANGE).

The purpose of this institute is to provide new directors of undergraduate research programs the means to develop and effectively run their programs and to help seasoned directors disseminate best practices and further build and improve their programs. This institute has the following goals:

  • To provide models of effective Undergraduate Research (UR) Programs
  • To equip UR Program directors with a "tool-kit" of essential items needed for running an undergraduate research center
  • To provide access to resources that are available for directors for continuous development of their undergraduate research programs
  • To provide UR Program directors with "mentors" who are willing to provide advice after the institute ends
  • To begin a network of directors that will extend beyond the dates of the workshops
  • To share with directors a variety of campus models that include broad disciplinary scope and focus, and work with students at different stages of their academic careers
