CANADIAN STUDIES GRANT PROGRAM

Deadlines:
Research Grant Program: November 2, 2009
Faculty Enrichment (Course Development) Program: December 1, 2009

The Canadian Government, through its Embassy and Consulates in the United States, supports research, conferences, teaching, and program activity related to Canada and/or Canada-U.S. relations. The Canadian Studies grant program seeks to encourage comparative research and teaching, faculty exchanges, student mobility, and collaboration between American and Canadian researchers. The program also seeks to build stronger ties between American and Canadian universities and colleges.

  • Research Grant Program assists individual scholars or teams of scholars in writing an article-length manuscript of publishable quality with a focus on Canada or Canada-U.S. relations.
  • Faculty Enrichment (Course Development) Program provides faculty members an opportunity to develop or update a course with substantial Canadian content that will be offered as part of their regular teaching load.

HAGLEY MUSEUM AND LIBRARY: Short-Term Grants-in-Aid

DEADLINES: June 30, October 31, March 31

Short-term grants-in-aid support visits to Hagley for scholarly research in the imprint, manuscript, pictorial, and artifact collections. They are designed to assist researchers with travel and living expenses while using the research collections. Scholars receive a stipend, make use of the research holdings, and participate in the programs of the Center for the History of Business, Technology, and Society.

ELIGIBILITY: These grants are to support serious scholarly work. They are available to both degree candidates and senior scholars and writers working independently as well as college and university teachers, librarians, archivists, museum curators, and scholars from fields other than humanities. Scholars are expected to participate in seminars which meet periodically, as well as attend noontime colloquia, lectures, and other public programs offered during their tenure.

FUNDING: Low cost housing may be available on the museum grounds. Stipends are for a minimum of two weeks, maximum of two months at no more than $1,600 per month.

NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS

Application guidelines for the next round of Grants for Arts Projects are now available on the National Endowment for the Arts' website. Organizations may apply under the following categories:

Access to Artistic Excellence
To encourage and support artistic excellence, preserve our cultural heritage, and provide access to the arts for all Americans. An organization may request a grant amount from $5,000 to $150,000.
DEADLINES: March 12 and August 13, 2009

Challenge America: Reaching Every Community Fast-Track Review Grants
To support projects that extend the reach of the arts to underserved populations. Grants are for $10,000.
DEADLINE: May 28, 2009

Learning in the Arts for Children and Youth
To advance arts education for children and youth in school-based or community-based settings. An organization may request a grant amount from $5,000 to $150,000.
DEADLINE: June 11, 2009

NEWBERRY LIBRARY: 2009-10 Long-Term Fellowships

Deadline: January 12, 2009

The Newberry's fellowships support humanities research in their collections. These wide-ranging and rich collections document the civilizations of Western Europe and the Americas.

Long-Term Fellowship awards support research and writing by scholars with a doctorate. Their purpose is to help fellows develop or complete larger scale studies that draw on their collections, and to foster intellectual exchange among fellows and the Library community. Fellowship terms range from six to eleven months with stipends ranging from $25,000 to $70,000.

NEWBERRY LIBRARY: 2009-10 Short-Term Fellowships

Deadline: March 2, 2009

The Newberry's fellowships support humanities research in their collections. These wide-ranging and rich collections document the civilizations of Western Europe and the Americas.

Ph.D. candidates and scholars with a doctorate are eligible for short-term fellowships. These help researchers study specific materials at the Newberry that are not readily available to them elsewhere. Most short-term fellowships are for one month, and most are restricted to scholars who live and work outside the Chicago area. Stipends start at $1,600 per month.

NEH Summer 2009 Seminars and Institutes

Each year the NEH's Division of Education Programs offers teachers opportunities to study humanities topics in a variety of Summer Seminars and Institutes.
All teachers selected to participate in a seminar or institute will be awarded a fixed stipend based on the length of the seminar or institute to help cover travel costs, books and other research expenses, and living expenses: $2,000 (2 weeks), $2,600 (3 weeks), $3,200 (4 weeks), $3,800 (5 weeks), or $4,400 (6 weeks). RICE UNIVERSITY: Humanities Research Center

With generous funding from the Lynette S. Autrey Endowment and the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Humanities Research Center at Rice University hosts four visiting professors for one semester each academic year. The fellows teach a course affiliated with a humanities department and take part in the intellectual life of the Center. The HRC sponsors special symposia or conferences centered on their research. These programs give Rice faculty and students significant exposure to eminent scholars from around the world.

SCHOLARLY EDITIONS GRANTS
DEADLINE: November 5, 2008 (for projects beginning as early as July 1, 2009)

Scholarly Editions Grants support the preparation of editions of pre-existing texts and documents that are currently inaccessible or available in inadequate editions. Projects must be undertaken by a team of at least one editor and one other staff member. Grants typically support editions of significant literary, philosophical, and historical materials, but other types of work, such as musical notation, are also eligible.

TEACHING DEVELOPMENT FELLOWSHIPS
DEADLINE: October 1, 2008 (online application)

Teaching Development Fellowships support college and university teachers pursuing research aimed specifically at deepening their core knowledge in the humanities to improve their undergraduate teaching. The program has three broad goals: 1) to improve the depth and quality of humanities education in the United States; 2) to strengthen the link between research and teaching in the humanities; and 3) to foster excellence in undergraduate instruction.

NEA: Access to Artistic Excellence

The Access to Artistic Excellence grant program through the National Endowment for the Arts encourages and supports artistic creativity, preserves our diverse cultural heritage and makes the arts more widely available in communities throughout the country. While projects in this category may focus on just one of these areas, the Arts Endowment recognizes that many of the most effective projects encompass both artistic excellence and enhanced access. The Arts Endowment is particularly interested in projects that extend the arts to underserved populations -- those whose opportunities to experience the arts are limited by geography, ethnicity, economics or disability.

GERMAN ACADEMIC EXCHANGE SERVICE: DAAD-AICGS Research Fellowships

AICGS is now accepting applications for the next round of DAAD fellowships. The application deadline for Spring 2009 (January 2009 - June 2009) is August 31, 2008. The DAAD/AICGS Research Fellowship Program, funded by a generous grant from the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD), is designed to bring scholars and specialists working on Germany, Europe, and/or transatlantic relations to AICGS for research stays of two months each.

NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES: Institute for Advanced Topics in the Digital Humanities

As part of the Endowment-wide Digital Humanities Initiative, these grants support national or regional (multi-state) research and training programs on approaches in humanities computing. Through these programs, the NEH seeks to increase the number of humanities scholars using digital technology in their research and broadly disseminate knowledge about advanced technology applications relevant to the humanities. The projects may be a single opportunity or offered multiple times to different audiences, although the duration of a program should allow for full and thorough treatment of the topic.

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation of New York City has generously renewed funding of postdoctoral Fellowships at the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies for the academic years 2006–2009. DIRKSEN CONGRESSION CENTER: Congressional Research Awards

Congressional Research Awards are offered by the Dirksen Congressional Center to fund the study of the leadership in the Congress, both House and Senate, and congressional procedures, such as committee operation or mechanisms for institutional change, and Congress and the electoral process. Awards range from a few hundred dollars to $3,500 and normally extend for one year.

SHELBY CULLOM DAVIS CENTER FOR HISTORICAL STUDIES

The Shelby Cullom Davis Center for Historical Studies supports residencies at Princeton that focus on the processes by which individuals or groups come to accept beliefs, ideas, rituals or practices that are radically different from those with which they began. For 2007-08, the Center will focus on the study of "Fear."

FRANKLIN RESEARCH GRANTS
