A Summer for Healing

My name is Katy Sims, and I'm writing to you from the 6th floor of the UNC-CH hospital. For those of you unfamiliar with the place, 6-East is the cancer floor. For the past nine months, I've been receiving treatment for bone cancer.

This summer, I complete my treatments. Sounds like a pretty boring summer, right? I've been busy, though. Between trips to the beach and mountains, my jobs life guarding and working at a hair salon (yeah, yeah. I know.) and treatments every two weeks, I've still managed to sleep 12 hours a night and visit the doctor at least once a week. This summer hasn't been in vain; I've met tons of new friends and have decided the course of my future. Although I hate to admit it, I've learned a lot from my cancer and have changed quite a bit. I can't wait to go back to school in the fall. If you see me around, feel free to say hey, ask questions, or share your story--I'm the one without hair!

Ann Peters:

Katy,
I, too have been without hair for a summer because of breast cancer. The good news is that I have a full head of hair now five years later and I'm doing well.
My son, Kevin will be a freshman at Davidson this fall and I'm looking forward to orientation in a few weeks. Its sounds like you have a great attitude and that makes such a difference.
I will keep you in my prayers for a complete recovery. May God bless you through this journey.

Gayle Whaley:

Katy, I also am a breast cancer survivor of 19 months and doing great. Keep up the great attitude and God Bless.
