How Marx Would Look at My Topic

My topic is the potential downfalls of solar energy.  Leo Marx's article "Does Improved Technology Mean Progress?", while not specifically about this subject, provides great insight into the broader themes of the topic.

Solar power is rapidly becoming a technology in which a rapidly growing percentage of the American population assumes is inherently good, and the answer to energy and environmental crises. Marx might regard this as an exception to his article.  Marx's thesis revolves around the idea that American's have moved away from "the enlightenment belief in progress", which he defines as the ideal that technological progress is linked directly to social and political progress. America followed this belief during its early years, and China may follow it now.  However, the advancement of solar power is becoming increasingly more political. With problems of global warming and fossil fuel dependence growing, the average citizen is becoming more informed, and more likely to be influenced by the increasing number of environmentalists.  Solar power has quickly become the most romanticized of new technologies. It is a political and social issue to the point where politician's characters are partially judged by their willingness to invest in its development.  While solar power no doubt will have long term uses, its rabid, passionate support places it in Marx's "enlightenment belief in progress" category.

As a mild critic analyzing the economic and practical issues of solar power, I believe Marx might be reminded of his story of visiting China.  In this case I would represent Marx, and the American public would represent the Chinese.  Since this is an area in which the Americans are truly infatuated with, while my topic focuses on the practical views only.
