I need some help finding some more sources for my topic. I'm still not positive how I'm going to narrow it down, but I'm going to go the route of the effect of the internet on the music business and try to argue that pirating is actually having a more positive effect on the music business. I'll have to find a good strategy for arguing that and I can probably do even better with the thesis but thats what I have for now.

matt,

there are some standard arguments for downloading helping music sales:

1) people download one song and then buy the cd.

2) people download something and tell others, who buy the cd.

3) downloading showed the industry how to distribute music more cheaply on the internet.

if you can go beyond those arguments in interesting ways then it could be a fun paper. i think it will be hard to show clearly what how exactly record sales have been affected; i'm not sure i'd attempt a strict cause/effect quantitative analysis.

Hi Matt,
I'm going to suggest two databases. Go to the library's Indexes & Databases page and try the following:
1) Academic Search Premier. This database is very interdisciplinary, and should prove useful. Try a keyword search for (piracy or pirating)and music. One article that turns up is titled "In Defense of Piracy" and sounds like it might be on target for you.
2) Music Index. Since this database is specifically related to music, try the following keyword search: (piracy or pirating) and internet.

Hope these help, and let me know what else I can do.
